Is a nominee the owner of the asset?

Generally, no. In India, a nominee is only a 'Trustee' who must distribute the asset to the legal heirs. The only major exception is for shares/demat accounts under the Companies Act 2013.

What happens if there is no Will?

If there is no Will, assets are distributed according to personal succession laws (Hindu Succession Act, etc.), which can lead to lengthy legal delays and family disputes.

Can I nominate anyone?

Yes, but for insurance, only 'Beneficiary Nominees' (spouse, children, parents) become absolute owners. For other assets, the legal heirs can challenge a non-heir nominee.
